Visiting the National Autonomous University of Mexico

President Turpin traveled to Mexico to help announce a $14-million international research collaboration. At this stop during the brief trip, he met with delegates from the National Autonomous University of Mexico to sign an MOU and tour campus.

Dental Clinic Tour - Kaye Edmonton Clinic

As part of the School of Dentistry's centennial celebrations, President Turpin toured the Dental and Dental Hygiene Patient Clinics at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic.

During a trip to India, President Turpin stopped in at the international Petrotech conference in New Delhi. While there, he shared the U of A's renowned energy expertise as part of an alternative energy panel titled, "Beyond Fossil Fuels."

President Turpin toured the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine's satellite program in Calgary to check out the facility, meet the students and faculty, and learn about the double-robotics technology that enables distance learning.

Building Reconciliation Forum

Building Reconciliation was held at the University of Alberta on September 28-29, 2016. The national forum brought together university leaders, First Nations, Métis and Inuit leaders, student leaders, and Aboriginal scholars to examine how universities are responding to the TRC's Calls to Action.

Strategic Investment Funding Announcement

On September 8, 2016, President Turpin helped to announce $82.5 million in infrastructure funding from the federal and provincial governments through the Strategic Investment Fund .

On August 30, 2016, President Turpin participated in a pipe ceremony and unveiling event to welcome a new installation on North Campus: the Sweetgrass Bear. Sculpted by Stewart Steinhauer, the Sweetgrass Bear is part of the university’s efforts to work toward respectful, meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

WCHRI Donation Announcement

On June 22, President David Turpin helped to announce the largest gift ever presented to the university. The combined gift, which includes donations from both the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation (who offered the largest single gift in the U of A's history) and the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, was given to the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI).

Fundraising BBQ for Fort McMurray

On May 11, the University of Alberta hosted a fundraising BBQ for the Fort McMurray relief efforts. In total, the U of A raised $16,435 in donations for the Red Cross. President David Turpin came out to welcome guests to the BBQ, greet Fort McMurray evacuees, speak with the media, and demonstrate his support for the relief efforts.

2016 Community Connections Awards

On May 2, President David Turpin attended the University of Alberta's 2016 Community Connections Awards at City Hall. Alongside Mayor Don Iveson, President Turpin presented the awards to professors Catherine Chan and Rhonda Bell (Community Scholars), the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Advocacy Committee (Community Leaders), and Calder Bateman (UAlberta Advocates).

SNOLAB Tour

On April 28, 2016, President Turpin toured SNOLAB - a physics laboratory located 2 km underground in the Vale Creighton mine near Sudbury, Ontario. The University of Alberta is one of six partner institutions that operate the SNOLAB Institute.

Visiting the AlbertaSat Lab

President David Turpin, Provost Steven Dew, US Consul General Thomas Palaia, and Universities Canada President Paul Davidson paid a visit to the AlbertaSat lab to see the Ex-Alta 1, a cube satellite. AlbertaSat, a student group made up of over 50 students and 10 professors, is working to build and launch Alberta’s first space satellite (the Ex-Alta 1) as part of QB50, an international mission that will launch 50 satellites designed by universities from around the globe.

Supporting Pink Shirt Day 2016

President Turpin demonstrated his support to end bullying by donning a pink shirt in honour of Pink Shirt Day. Standing in solidarity with participants from across the country, those wearing a pink shirt on February 24, 2016 have demonstrated their desire to end bullying.

On Thursday, February 18, 2016, President David Turpin met with the Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence and MP for Calgary Centre. The two met while in Ottawa where the president met with a number of elected officials and senior civil servants to champion U of A initiatives.


China Scholarship Council Reception

On Monday, February 1, 2016, President David Turpin joined with members of University of Alberta International, the China Institute, and the Faculty of Graduate Studies & Research, as they celebrated the members of the China Scholarship Council who are currently studying at the U of A. The reception included appearances by the officials from the Consulate General of People's Republic of China in Calgary and in Vancouver. President Turpin participated in the school wide mental health check-in on January 27, 2016. How was he feeling? Proud - of the U of A community for having an open dialogue about mental health and the well being of the students, staff, and faculty.

On December 14, 2015, President David Turpin was joined by the Honourable Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Advanced Education and Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour on a tour of the Discovery Mall in ECHA. The tour was lead by Dean Zaragoza, Executive Director Health Sciences Council, Sharla King, Director Health Sciences Education and Research Commons, Mary Forhan, Assistant Professor, Occupational Therapy, Lead Bariatric Care and Research Rehabilitation Group, and Lili Liu, Chair, Occupational Therapy, co-academic lead for the Smart Condo. 

During the tour, researchers highlighted the work being carried out by the Bariatric Care and Rehabilitation Group, which is an interdisciplinary research project. Both the Specialty Care (Bariatric) Suite and the Smart Condo spaces were explored.

On September 25, 2015, the U of A hosted its annual Green and Gold Day. The day serves as a celebration of the people who make the U of A the vibrant, involved and innovative community that it is—students, faculty, staff and alumni. The day is held each September and features festive activities that uplift and connect the U of A community near and far. This was President Turpin's first Green and Gold Day.

Orientation 2015

On August 31, 2015, President Turpin joined Mayor Don Iveson, Alumni Association President Mary Pat Barry, Students' Union President Navneet Khinda, and special guest speaker, Dave Mowat (CEO, ATB Financial) at the annual Presidents' Address. As the touchstone event of new student Orientation, this gathering provided the president with an opportunity to welcome the U of A's next generation to campus.

On August 14, 2015, President Turpin was invited to help the SU's new Orientation team prepare a welcome message for this year's new students. While out and about on North Campus, he was able to chat with a number of U of A faculty, staff, and students and was also able to pose for a few photos along the way.

Visiting Keyano College

On August 18, 2015, President Turpin visited Keyano College in Alberta's Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. While there, he met with Kevin Nagel, President and CEO of Keyano College. During the visit, the two, who were joined by additional members of the Keyano team, engaged in a series of  discussions around collaboration opportunities.

The following day, President Turpin was also able to see some of the sights in Fort McMurray, including the Syncrude plant.
