Holiday Greetings from the Director

08 December 2021

It is my great pleasure to issue the 14th annual newsletter for the Prince Takamado Japan Canada Memorial Fund. As the year 2021 comes to an end, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who supported our activities. It was a very difficult year for us because our long-term supporter, the JACOS/JPEX, which established its scholarships in Engineering has withdrawn its business from Alberta. The company was deeply rooted in our community for many years, supporting our students. Its memory and legacy will stay with us. The lasting pandemic forced us to suspend our students' mobility programs once again this year, and the lack of interaction had a serious impact on our learning environment. Challenges notwithstanding, we were very fortunate to host several virtual events throughout the year. Our highlights for students’ programs were the JACAC students’ forum which was held in February and the KAKEHASHI exchange project, which was made possible by the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada in November. We also co-hosted two international conferences virtually in August: the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education and Replaying Japan, building a network of scholars internationally. Also, at the end of summer, we were very pleased to welcome Mr. Tatsukuni Uchida, a new Consul-General of Japan in Calgary on campus, who met President Bill Flanagan and Interim Dean Steve Patten. While the global pandemic continues to influence our intellectual exchanges and students' mobility, we will strive to offer the best possible programs to enhance academic relations between Japan and Canada. We wish all of you a happy holiday season.
