International Summer Program

Canada "Eh" to "Zed"
July 17 - August 4, 2017

This International Summer Program will provide students with the opportunity to experience campus life at one of Canada’s top universities.

The program combines professional development, interdisciplinary studies, and cross-cultural learning opportunities, with time for exploration, relaxation and fun!  Three weeks in one of Canada’s most energetic festival cities may inspire future study and career options!

During this program, you will develop skills in:

  • Group work
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Leadership
  • Public Speaking

Program Highlights

Each of the three weeks will cover a different theme, and include academic lectures and field trips as well as leisure activities. Students can also request meetings with professors in their field of interest and explore graduate program options.

The themes for 2017 are:

  • Week 1: Canadian Studies
  • Week 2: Sustainability
  • Week 3: Community Service Learning


Workshops

In addition to the weekly lectures, participants will also take part in two workshops during the course of the program.

Workshop A: The Expressive Voice and Body

This invigorating workshop will allow you to explore and develop your expressive voice. Using improvisational theatre techniques, you will learn skills and strategies that will allow you to present yourself and your ideas to maximum effectiveness in a variety of circumstances to various audiences. Previous drama experience is not required. (12.5 contact hours = 2.5 hours per day for 5 days)

Workshop B: Topics in Global Leadership

Facilitated by Dr. Richard Field, a Professor of Strategic Management and Organization with the Alberta School of Business, this workshop emphasizes critical thinking, ethical awareness, and problem solving – all skills that can be applied in various disciplines. (12.5 contact hours = 2.5 hours per day for 5 days)


Leisure Activities

An extensive program of extra-curricular activities will allow you to explore everything Edmonton and the University of Alberta has to offer – from our famous river valley to the various summer festivals, as well as UAlberta’s recreation centres and programs.

Past leisure activities have included:

  • Canoeing on the North Saskatchewan River
  • Wall climbing at the Wilson Climbing Centre
  • Trip to West Edmonton Mall
  • Visiting the Art Gallery of Alberta
  • Movie and karaoke nights


Canadian Rockies Trip: July 29 & 30

The two-day Canadian Rockies trip lets you experience Canadian nature in one of Canada’s world-famous national parks. Enjoy and explore the breathtaking scenery and beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Transportation, accommodation, breakfast and leisure activities such as canoeing, hiking, and visiting the natural hot springs are included.  Participants will also have free time for exploring on their own.


Eligibility Requirements

In order to be considered for the International Summer Program, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants must be registered in a full-time undergraduate program at a designated post-secondary institution.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of the program start date.
  • All participants are required to sign a Release of Liability and Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement in order to participate in the program. More information about this agreement will be available at the time of registration.

Academic Credit Transfer Information

The academic program will consist of at least 40 contact hours. A letter of participation confirming actual contact hours will be presented to each participant.


Accommodation

Housing is included in the program fee. Students will stay on campus at Lister Residence Centre, in twin rooms and shared bathrooms on each floor. Linen and towel service is provided. Each floor also has a shared kitchen (pots, pans, etc. not provided) and common area with television and phone (local calls only).

Laundry facilities are available at an additional pay-per-use fee. Wireless internet is available campus-wide.


Health Insurance

Health insurance is not included in the program fee. The purchase of travelers’ health insurance prior to departure to Canada that is valid for the entire duration of travel is the responsibility of each participant and is strongly recommended.


Program Fees

The program fee for the International Summer Program is $3,800 CAD for individual registration. This fee includes:

  • 14-day academic program (instruction, arrangements and administrative support) 
  • Transportation to and from the Edmonton International Airport and the University of Alberta
  • Accommodation in twin rooms
  • Pre-loaded cash card with a $300 CAD meal allowance (can also be used for other goods and services on campus)
  • Field trips and leisure activities
  • Canadian Rockies Trip (2 nights, 2 days)

Group Discounts

For 8 to 14 students from the same university the, each participant will receive a $200 CAD discount to the program fee.

For 15 or more students from the same university, each participant will receive a $400 CAD discount to the program fee.


How to Apply

Application will be available online starting September 18, 2016.

Application deadline is May 22, 2017.

Please note that the program will be cancelled if there are fewer than 15 registrations by May 31, 2017. Full refunds will be issued at that time.
