The Protective Services team aims to support a positive university environment for students, staff, faculty and visitors through the prevention, intervention and response to risks and emerging issues related to safety and security.

U of A students, faculty, staff and third-party users of our campuses have a vital role to play in keeping our campuses safe for learning and work. Even small actions can make a big difference.

Basics for students, faculty + staff

Students, faculty and staff should be aware of and exercise personal safety and security measures on a daily basis, and help inform their peers and colleagues when opportunities exist.

Emergency notifications

In an emergency we'll send you messages using several methods:

Building alarms + muster points

Building alarms mean you must evacuate the building. On exit, proceed to the nearest muster point.

Report incidents to Health, Safety + Environment

Where university people or property are involved, you must report the following to Health, Safety and Environment:

  • Serious incidents
  • Injury
  • Exposure to hazardous substances
  • Near-miss or unsafe condition
  • Property damage
  • Spill or other uncontrolled release of hazardous material to the environment
  • Collision or other vehicle-related incident
