"This paper is part 1 of a 3-part series on the health of lawyers. Part I addresses the impact lawyering has on the life and death of others. It addresses the harsh realities faced by those practicing law, and recognizes the challenge of being happy, healthy and
maintaining ethical conduct under difficult circumstances. It defines addiction and mental disorders, addresses the features of each, the prevalence, and causes of mental illness and addiction, and outlines the challenge of stigma, resulting in underreporting of mental illness and addiction among lawyers. This section further outlines a remedial approach to the problem and briefly addresses the investigative approach to conduct complaints where mental illness and addiction may be relevant."
