Department of Psychology Inclusivity Statement
19 December 2017

We have become aware of concerns about a public colloquium in our Department as part of Brian Harder Research Day in April 2017. These concerns have prompted a great deal of discussion. The talk dealt with topics that are historically connected to very great wrongs in our society, and a great deal of hurt has been caused to people through ignorance of these issues. As researchers, we believe that science can only advance through frank academic discussion. Concerns were raised specifically with some of the colloquial language used during the lecture, rather than the subject matter itself. The Department apologizes for any offence taken or perceived threat caused by such language use. Our Department’s recent moves (e.g., gender neutral bathrooms; an ad hoc equity committee) reflect our commitment to creating a safer environment for all that embraces the diversity of our students and society as a whole.
