Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How often is the examination is offered?
    The exam is offered twice a year. The tests will take place on the first Sunday of the months of July and December.
  2. Who is eligible to take the exam?
    Anyone is eligible to take the exam, however Japanese citizens can only write the exam if their first language is not Japanese.
  3. Will the examination accommodate persons with disabilities?
    Yes. Please contact Prince Takamado Japan Centre before applying. Then we will make special provisions for candidates who have require special accommodations.
  4. Are there any study materials or past examinations available?
    You can get study materials from Japanese bookstores or check the library at your institution.
    At the University of Alberta, you can find JLPT study materials on the 5th floor of Rutherford Library or at the PTJC (a valid ONEcard is required).
    Also, past JLPT papers and question booklets below are published every year by BONJINSHA.
  5. Can I change the levels after submitting the application form?
    No. If you would like to change the level, you have to submit the new application form and fee before the deadline. There is no refund in this case.
  6. Can I challenge two levels at the same time?
    No. However, if you are unsure which level you would like to challenge, you can submit two application forms and fees. There is no refund for the level which you did not take.
  7. Can I submit the application form after the deadline?
    No. We cannot accept late applications.
  8. What should I do if I am unable to attend the exam?
    You do not have to notify your absence. There is no refund after your application is accepted.
  9. Can I take the exam home?
    No. You cannot take the examination booklet and answer sheet after the exam has completed. If you try to take the examination, you will be disqualified and your exam will not be marked.
  10. Can I get my test voucher early?
    No. All of the registration materials will be sent at the same time.
  11. If I have not received my test voucher, what should I do?
    If you have not received a test voucher after the date indicated here, please contact us.
  12. I lost my test voucher. What should I do?
    Please contact us by email at ptjc@ualberta.ca.
  13. Can I change the exam location after submitting the application?
    No. You cannot change the exam location. You have to submit a new application form and fee before the deadline. There will be no refund in this case.
  14. Can I get the result by telephone, fax, or email?
    No. Your result will be sent only by mail, so please ensure you enter your correct mailing address on your online application.
  15. Is there any expiry date for the certificate?
    The certificate is valid for life.
  16. How do I check my score online?
    As of the July 2012 test, scores will be available online approximately 3 months after the test has been written. Scores will only be available if, during application, test takers chose a 8 digit password of their own creation. Results can be found online at: http://www.jlpt.jp/e/guideline/results_online.html
