Volunteering for balance

Yvonne Uyanwune is a devoted volunteer. She volunteered as the vice-president (academic) for the University of Alberta’s Graduate Residence Council and as a member of the registration committee for the Campus Alberta Student Conference on Health. She also got involved at a middle school as a mentor, and took part in Heroes for Health, a student-run competition that strives to make UAlberta campus a healthier place. Uyanwune is was an ongoing volunteer with the School of Public Health Students’ Association where she served as director at large.

Volunteering helps to balance me. As much as I love to study and be involved in school, I like to give back to communities,” says Uyanwune, who studied as a master of public health student. “It makes my day better.

Winning this award helped me focus on my goals for my time at the School and after I graduate,” she says. “I was able to stop worrying about financial pressures and focus on my career as an epidemiologist and how it will help me continue to give back to the community.
