Dean's Gold Medal Award

The Dean's Gold Medal was created during the 10th anniversary year of the School of Public Health. The award is intended to recognize a student's superior academic performance. 

The Dean's Gold Medal will be awarded for the first time in June 2017. 

Dean's Gold Medal - MPH students

To be awarded annually in June for students who completed the MPH degree and are eligible to graduate at the previous Fall and Spring convocations.

Eligibility and nomination criteria

Students in the MPH program will be assessed on:

  • the capping project and will have a paper/report and communique rated Good on assessment rubrics by all reviewers, with recommendation for consideration of award. The capping project rubric will include a tick box for: Exceptional – Recommend for a Dean’s Gold Medal (MPH)
  • overall academic performance.

Nomination and selection procedure

  • Capping project instructors will:
    • Create a list of all students for whom the “Exceptional – Recommend for a Gold Medal” box has been ticked on all reviewers’ Capping Project Final Paper and Communique assessment rubrics.
    • Nominate up to three students per year, attempting to reflect different specializations over time, with recommendation letter from the Capping Course instructor.
  • The School of Public Health Awards Committee will review and rank nominees, considering the recommendation letter and normally GPA > 3.7, with greater weight on the Capping Project
    • In the event of a tie, the Awards Committee may choose to present the award to two students or ask the dean to decide.

Nomination period

Nominations for the Dean's Gold Medal for MPH students will be accepted beginning May 27, 2016.

Nomination deadline

For 2017, nominations will be accepted until April 30, 2017.


Dean's Gold Medal - MSc students

To be awarded annually in June for students who completed the MSc degree and are eligible to graduate at the previous Fall and Spring convocations.

Students in the MSc program will be assessed:

  • primarily on a completed thesis and oral defence with full committee (including external member) agreement to recommend for award with rationale recorded on MSc thesis defence chair’s form. The form will include a tick box for: Exceptional – Recommend for a Dean’s Gold Medal (MSc).
  • on overall academic performance.

Nomination and selection procedure

School of Public Health Awards Committee administrative staff will:

  • create a list of nominees for whom the “Exceptional – Recommend for a Gold Medal” box has been ticked on the thesis defense form and is supported by the rationale recorded on the MSc thesis defence chair’s form.
The Awards Committee will review and rank nominees, considering:
  • rationale and, normally, 
  • GPA > 3.7, with greater weight on the thesis defence.

Nominations for the Dean's Gold Medal for MSc students will be accepted beginning May 27, 2016.

Dean's Gold Medal - PhD students

If there is a candidate to nominate, to be awarded in the spring for students who completed the PhD program and are eligible to graduate at the previous Fall and Spring convocations.

Eligibility and nomination criteria

Students in the PhD program will be assessed:

  • primarily, on a completed thesis and oral defence with full committee (including external member) agreement to recommend for award with comments/rationale recorded on PhD thesis defence chair’s form.

Nomination and selection procedure

School of Public Health Awards Committee administrative staff will:
  • create a list of nominees for the year for whom “Recommend for award” has been indicated on thesis defense form, supported by the rationale recorded on the PhD thesis defence chair’s form.  

The Awards Committee will review and rank nominees, considering:

  • rationale.
NOTE: There will not necessarily a nominee each year.
