CanMEDS

The current medical environment and societal demands pose many challenges for today's physicians. The CanMEDS competencies were developed by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). They serve as a framework to develop and train the best possible physicians for such an environment. The initiative was first conceived at the beginning of the 1990's. In 1996, the RCPSC adopted the first CanMEDS competency framework. A new, revised CanMEDS competency framework was approved by RCPSC council in April 2005. The framework applies to all specialties.

All residents must become thoroughly familiar and knowledgeable with the CanMEDS competencies; they are the framework around which your residency training has been designed. Competencies are defined as "important observable knowledge, skills and attitudes".
