Mothers with Intellectual Disabilities from Different Cultural Communities: A Narrative Study

The aim of this study is to dedicate attention to the voices of mothers with intellectual disabilities from minority cultures in Quebec, Canada by using narrative inquiry. A purposive sample of 8 mothers with intellectual disabilities from different cultural communities in Montreal, Quebec, Canada will be recruited.

The objective is to uncover the life stories of mothers with intellectual disabilities from different ethno-cultural communities. Another objective, is to explore the meanings they ascribe to motherhood, and how their experience is impacted by 'critical incidents' and by their interweaving identities; gender, disability and culture.

The hope is that this study can give us further insight into the relationships between individuals (family, upbringing) and wider social constructs.
