Grant Assist Program

Foundation Stage 1 Internal Review

Purpose: To provide applicants the opportunity to obtain feedback on their Stage 1 Foundation application through a meeting between the applicant and two reviewers. For individuals who previously submitted a Foundation application, we recommend participating in a feedback debrief.

June 1, 2018: Deadline to Declare Intent to Participate

Interested applicants should email cihrgrants@ualberta.ca with the following:

  1. Title of the program of research.
  2. List of any Program Co-leaders.
  3. A summary of your research program (<1 page).
  4. Names of six senior colleagues who could serve as reviewers.* It is helpful to indicate the reason for each reviewer’s inclusion (e.g. content expert, CIHR peer review committee member).

*Having reviewers with different expertise can be helpful. See here for a list of UofA faculty who have reviewed at CIHR for the Foundation competition. When you suggest reviewers for your Internal Review meeting, remember that the match between Stage 1 Foundation reviewers and the topic of an application is not tight. We are willing to suggest reviewers as needed.

Note: We encourage applicants to declare their intent to participate in the Internal Review well before the deadline. Engaging the Grant Assist Program (Health Sciences) earlier often provides a better chance of securing the applicant's first choice of reviewers, including those reviewers who have participated in the relevant peer review process at CIHR.

10 days before Internal Review meeting: Applicants should email their complete & polished application and any relevant previous reviews from funding agencies directly to internal reviewers and copy cihrgrants@ualberta.ca

Because we keenly value the time that reviewers donate, we are asking reviewers to decline to review if they are not provided sufficient time to review the application or receive an unpolished application.
