March Madness!

Andre Bonfiglio Compean - 26 March 2021

The noise is overwhelming, something you have never heard before. You feel it vibrating through your bones. The whole crowd cheering—Bears! Pandas!—rooting for their team to overcome the odds and come out victorious. 68 teams… only one champion in a single elimination tournament. There is nothing like March Madness!

Basketball players, coaches and fans all study up and build their strategies: Filling out brackets, checking the numbers, waiting for the moment they can run into the court in celebration after a teammate shoots the game winning shot with 0.9 seconds left in the clock—or… heads shaking in despair as they go home after that shot is just missed.

March Madness is full of absolute madness: drama, tears, goodbyes—or joy, shouts, hope, and glory! The players go into a tournament that will define their career and that they will never forget. One small mistake can determine their faith. Coaches and players need to perform under pressure and be clutch when the time comes.

Much like in NCAA’s March Madness basketball tournament, March in university and residence is a total rollercoaster. This is the time of the year where we are drowned in midterms, applying for jobs, looking for a place to live, deciding whether we want to stay on our program... and the list goes on.

March can be a very overwhelming month and we need to stay on top of our game. We have many people cheering for us: our friends, our family, Res Services, University Services, our RAs.

We are nearing the finish line and before you know, it will all be over! You will have completed your first (or another) year of university! So use as much energy as you have left in the tank, make one last push (your best one yet) and then go have fun with your friends and family.

Pat yourself on the back! Recognize how hard you worked and enjoy of a well-deserved and restful summer break.

For now though, let’s just get through all this madness together. Make sure to take some time for yourself to work on your wellness along the way and remember that we are always here for you. :)
