Things to do within walking distance of campus

hawrelakEdmonton has something for everyone during the summer months—from long evenings to cultural events. This summer might feel a bit different from the usual, but there’s still a lot to check out.

Here’s a list of our favourite things within a 3 km radius of campus. Happy exploring!

Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market

1.9km (approx. 25 minute walk)

Just one block south of Whyte Ave and nestled between Gateway Boulevard and Calgary Trail, you’ll find this year-round indoor farmers’ market. It is free to enter and showcases a variety of local produce and artisan creations that are available for purchase. The fruit and vegetable selection during the summer months is always a delight.

Kinsmen Pitch & Putt

1.4 km (approx. 17 minute walk, downhill)

Located on the edge of the River Valley is the Kinsmen Pitch & Putt. This fun and easy golf course has been operating since 1961—it focuses on the short game of golf, with no hole being longer than 100 yards, so only a pitching wedge and putter are needed. It costs $20 for 18 holes including clubs!

Kinsmen Spray Park

1.4km (approx. 17 minute walk, downhill)

Just a minute away from the Kinsmen Pitch & Putt is the Kinsmen Spray Park. The park is free and the perfect place to go to cool down on a hot summer’s day. There are a variety of features that spray or dump water on you.

William Hawrelak Park

2.2km (approx. 27 minute walk, downhill)

This park is a year-round Edmonton staple, hosting the Ice Castles, Heritage Days and lots more. Located just off of Groat Road on the North Saskatchewan River is a variety of picnic sites, campfire sites, walking trails, wide open fields, a lake (which you can paddle boat on) and a concession stand. It is a great spot to go with some friends for some time outside. Located across the river on a footbridge is Buena Vista Park, which has a variety of trails and a large off-leash dog park—if you want to go dog-watch.

Alberta Legislature Grounds

1.8km (approx. 22 minute walk)

Home to the Alberta Legislature Building, the leg grounds are an oasis on the edge of Edmonton’s downtown core. From beautiful flower gardens to lawn bowling, a music stand and lots of places to sit back and relax, the grounds have a little bit of everything. You can also tour nearby government buildings or visit the interpretation centre to learn more about Alberta’s rich history.

Ice cream shops

Ice cream and gelato are one of my favourite summer treats and there are a lot of choices close to campus. Here are a few of my favourites—all sold by the scoop!

Rosso Pizzeria
450m (approx. 6 minute walk)

They serve gelato and make it in house. Plus it is very close to campus, so it makes for an easy walk.

La Carraia Gelateria Café
2.3km (approx. 27 minute walk)

La Carraia is located along 109 Street just south of Jasper Avenue. They make authentic Florentine gelato—this is one of their first cafés outside of Florence!

Made by Marcus
1.8km (approx. 23 minute walk)

Made by Marcus opened their first store outside of YYC last summer. They have a variety of flavours including twists the classics as well as vegan options. You’ll find them just off Whyte Avenue down the brick walking-alley between Cacao 70 & Glam Slam.

Kind Ice Cream
3.8km (approx. 48 minute walk)

Yes, it’s a bit beyond our 3 km radius—but it’s worth it. From classic flavours to new and exciting combos, Kind has something for everyone—including vegan and gluten free!

Keillor Point (aka “End of the World”)

2.6km (approx. 33 minute walk)

This lookout point in the Belgravia neighbourhood overlooks the river valley and is a spectacular spot to catch the sunset.
