Eastern Ascent 2020 UPDATE

We are working hard to reimagine Eastern Ascent during this time of physical distancing.
We are still committed to helping you learn about life in residence, make friends and get the most out of your university experience.
Please continue to monitor your UAlberta email for updates regarding Eastern Ascent.

Eastern Ascent is the Residence Services upper-year student orientation program specifically designed for students living in our East Campus residences. Eastern Ascent was implemented to enable residents to become comfortable in their new living environment, develop peer connections and become better oriented to the Edmonton community and campus. Eastern Ascent focuses on providing residents with the chance to explore and develop a sense of citizenship within the Edmonton community and establish a strong support system in residence prior to the start of Fall Term.

From August 27 to September 8, residents moving into any of our East Campus residences (HUB, Pinecrest & Tamarack House, Aspen & Maple House, Peter Lougheed Hall, International House, Newton Place, Graduate Residence, Nîpisîy House, or Linden House) will have the opportunity to take part in many activities that will be sure to have a lasting impact on your year, as you transition to your new community.

Eastern Ascent is designed to provide residents with the opportunity to develop close connections with their peers and neighbours, attend conference-style workshops prior to classes to help start the term off strong, and become familiar with the greater campus and Edmonton community—all before classes begin!

This orientation program is also filled with optional events hosted in residence, on campus, and in the greater Edmonton community. A day trip to West Edmonton Mall, speed friending, and Block Party are only a few of the fun events planned for you during Eastern Ascent.

Eastern Ascent is the perfect program for all students: those new to living on campus and those who have lived in a UAlberta residence before!

By participating in Eastern Ascent, you will:

  • Settle into your new home
  • Bond with your community and make new friends throughout residence
  • Develop a personal and academic support network
  • Connect with helpful resources on and off-campus
  • Develop a sense of citizenship and engagement with the Edmonton community

Please be aware that due to the large number of students who participate in Eastern Ascent, each schedule differs by community.
You will receive the full Eastern Ascent schedule for your floor when you move in.

Welcome Home Hangouts are opportunities to connect with peers living in residence through a variety of fun and intentional programs. Welcome Home Hangouts occur every evening from August 28 to September 7 in East Campus Commons from 7:00 pm–9:00 pm as a part of Eastern Ascent. Every night the hangout features a different program and theme, so try checking out as many as you can!

Block Party is an annual afternoon of fun in the East Campus Walkway that celebrates the end of Eastern Ascent and ensures we wrap up orientation week with good food, new neighbours, and entertainment! This year, Block Party is being held on Saturday, September 7 from 11:00 am–4:00 pm.

Snag a ride on free segway tours of campus, unleash your silly side with free face painting, or get a little competitive with the variety of lawn games and interactive stands located on the walkway. Various groups from on campus and around Edmonton also will be at Block Party with booths featuring info and free swag! You can also grab yourself some tasty eats from one of the many food trucks that will be lining the walkway.

Everyone is welcome, so be sure to drop in, meet new people, have a bite, and leave feeling more connected to your community!

Make sure to add the event to your calendar. Can't wait to see you there!
