Where there's fire, there's smoke

Summer fire season has arrived. Learn more about air quality and working safely outdoors here

Risk Management Superstars!

Insurance & Risk Assessment and the University of Alberta’s insurer recently completed annual loss control inspections. This process helps the university to identify and mitigate hazardous situations that could compromise the safety of our students, staff, and visitors. With the help of our partners in Environment, Health & Safety, Facilities & Operations and others, we were able to implement more than 50 corrective actions.

Thank you to those "superstar" staff and students working hard to keep our campuses safe! To view a list of "gold star spaces," visit the I&RA website

Don't Feed the (Bike) Thieves

Warmer weather means more bikes and that means... more theft.

Trends

In 2018 there were 64 reported thefts of bikes from U of A property, 85% of which occurred between April and September. July and August were the busiest months for theft.

Tips

This summer, start using a U-shaped lock to secure your bike frame to a bike rack. To review bike theft data on campus, visit the UAPS crime map.

Hidden Hazards

Did you know that you can start a fire by leaving a laptop or cell phone charging on your bed? Or that inexpensive chargers for your devices can pose a significant fire hazard?

In 2018 the University of New Brunswick conducted a "dorm burn" to demonstrate the hazards of electronic devices and the importance of evacuating a building as soon as you hear a fire alarm. Watch the video and learn how to avoid these hidden hazards.

Scenes of Safety Photo Contest

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 2019 Safety and Health Week Scenes of Safety photo contest! Winners were Dick Puurveen (Best Overall) and Kevin Zentner (People's Choice; photo credit Renee Yu).

Cannabis Use Locations

We're in the eighth month of legal recreational cannabis and, so far, not much has changed. Many people report they haven't smelled cannabis smoke on campus even once. There are three locations on North Campus where it's okay to smoke or vape cannabis, as shown above.
There's one spot each at Augustana and Campus Saint-Jean as well. Learn more here.
