Glenrose dental clinic expansion

The expansion will provide patients with increased access to specialized oral health care.

03 January 2012

The University of Alberta's School of Dentistry recognizes the importance of preparing students to provide treatment for individuals who face physical challenges. The clinical mandate of the Oral Health Services program at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital includes the provision of dental services to inpatient and outpatient populations. This dental clinic at the Glenrose specializes in providing comprehensive service for the treatment and prevention of oral disease in frail, older adults and for individuals with physical disabilities or other care needs. Expanding this service will provide a unique learning environment for dental students. They will have a "hands-on" opportunity to provide treatment for the aged or medically compromised patients. The expansion of the clinic will also provide an expanded and redeveloped space with state-of-the-art equipment and provide patients increased access to specialized oral health care.

Here's what some of the patients who use the Glenrose dental clinic had to say:

"I've been going to the Glenrose dental clinic for 10 years now. They treat me good. Dr. Wright is a very good dentist - he fixes my teeth, keeps on schedule and calls me to check on how I am doing. He always tries his best for people. I recommended the clinic to my neighbour. Although the facility is not up-to-date, it does the job." ~Emil Tobias

"Dr. Wright is one of the nicest people I've ever met. I've been going to the clinic for five years. It's busy there and they could use a bigger facility. The atmosphere at the Glenrose is tremendous and people there are very caring. It's a much needed service." ~Vivian Osterman

"We have been using the Glenrose dental services for over 10 years. It is convenient, the fees are affordable and the staff are excellent. We don't know where we would go if we didn't have the Glenrose. We are happy to hear that the facilities may be expanded-bigger space means more students can teach and more patients can receive care." ~Mr. & Mrs. Saks

The School of Dentistry is proud to be a part of something so important in our community. Part of our mandate is to educate, develop and promote oral health for the purpose of enriching the professional dental community and improving the overall health and well-being of Albertans.

Many of our community partners and key stakeholders have contributed generously already, but we invite others to be a part of this experience too. If you want to make a difference to the vulnerable populations we serve - to aging parents, to somebody's ailing mother, or to an individual in a wheelchair, who may have troubles seeking care in normal facilities, please contact Karen Frost for ways to give.
