General Practice Residency Program (GPR)

COVID-19 Update for the School of Dentistry Oral Health Clinic
General Practice Residency Program

Dear Patients:

May 14, 2020

As of May 14, the Government of Alberta has officially launched stage 1 of its relaunch strategy and as part of this, the Alberta Dental Association & College has stated that Alberta dentists are permitted to return to full provision of services.

The School of Dentistry is working on its ‘return to work’ plan as we need to take many things into consideration. Once we have our plan in place, we will communicate with our active patients of record to inform them of what they can expect from us in the coming months. In the meantime, we are still providing urgent and emergency services.

If you are an existing patient of record and have a question, please email us at As we do not have all of our phone lines open, it is best to contact us by email.

If you have an emergency or urgent care need, please consider the following:

The Alberta Dental Association & College defines emergency dental care that includes treatment of oral-facial trauma, significant infection, prolonged bleeding, pain which cannot be managed by over the counter medications, or management of known/high-risk malignancy, while urgent dental care focuses on the management of conditions that require immediate attention to relieve pain and if left untreated may significantly compromise patient dental health such as the following:

  • Severe dental pain from pulpal inflammation
  • Pericoronitis or third-molar pain
  • Dry socket pain and dressing changes
  • Abscess, or localized bacterial infection resulting in localized pain and swelling
  • Tooth fracture resulting in pain or causing soft tissue trauma
  • Dental trauma with avulsion/luxation
  • Dental treatment required prior to critical medical procedures
  • Final crown/bridge cementation
  • Management of active orthodontic cases

We have taken all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our patients when they come in for their scheduled appointments such as adequate spacing between our operatories, appropriate personal protective equipment for our operators and disinfection of all clinical areas before and after treating patients.

Patients will be provided with additional instructions prior to their appointment.

Hours of operation for our General Practice Residency program are Monday to Friday, except statutory holidays, from 9:00 am-1:00 pm.

If you have a dental emergency or require urgent dental care, please call General Practice Residency Program: (780) 407-5562.

Treatment delivered by dental residents (licensed dentists receiving an extra year of training)
  • Please call (780) 407-5562 to schedule an appointment.
  • As the work is done by licensed dentists (not students), fees are slightly higher than those charged in our Dentistry and Dental Hygiene Programs.

The General Practice Residency Program at the University of Alberta School of Dentistry is proud to offer dental services with licensed dentists, dental hygienists and support staff at reduced fees in our Oral Health Clinic.

In order that we may continue to do so, it is very important that we eliminate missed appointments and last minute cancellations. We ask that patients give a minimum of 48 hours notice to our Treatment Co-ordinator in order that we have adequate time to adjust our clinic schedule.

A charge of $75.00 will be incurred by the patient if an appointment is missed without 48 hours' notice. This fee must be paid prior to further appointments being scheduled. A second missed appointment will unfortunately necessitate dismissal from the GPR Program.

PLEASE NOTE: The School of Dentistry Oral Health Clinic WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT CASH PAYMENTS. We will continue to accept all other methods of payment including Debit, Visa, MasterCard, American Express and personal cheques.

Adherence to this policy will allow our residents to maximize their learning while allowing our clinic to operate efficiently, ultimately allowing us to keep our fees affordable for our patients.

Thank you for helping us keep the GPR Program operating efficiently.
