School of Library and Information Studies

About Us

Welcome to the School of Library and Information Studies. We are part of the Faculty of Education and offer the only Master of Library and Information Studies program on the Canadian prairies that is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA).

SLIS also offers an inter-faculty combined degree program Master of Library and Information Studies/Master of Arts in Digital Humanities (DH), and is a home department for the Master of Arts in Digital Humanities program. In July 2018 the Humanities Computing (HUCO) program changed to Digital Humanities, which is reflected in the 2019-2020 Academic Calendar

In Fall 2013 we launched our fully online MLIS program. In Fall 2014 SLIS started offering a combined Master of Business Administration / Master of Library and Information Studies Program in conjunction with the Alberta School of Business. SLIS also offers opportunities for individual Interdisciplinary PhD's in conjunction with other University of Alberta departments that house PhD programs.

The School's vision for teaching, research, and service is grounded in a multi-disciplinary focus on issues of information access and equity.

Diverse members of the SLIS community engage with the information professions, post-secondary education, government, and not-for–profit settings in service of the public good. Engagement occurs both formally and informally through research and scholarship, project management, teaching and learning, academic and professional service, policy development, and volunteerism at the grassroots level. Our engagement relies on an ethos of collaboration, cultural awareness and an ethic of mutuality.
