Congratulations to Dr. Lisa Given, Professor, who has been appointed to Canada's Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics (PRE). PRE is a body of external experts established in November 2001 by three Canadian research agencies -- the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) -- to support the development and evolution of their joint research ethics policy the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS). PRE advises the Agencies on the evolution, interpretation, implementation and educational needs of the TCPS. PRE's independent and multidisciplinary advice is intended to promote high standards of ethical conduct, advance the protection of human research participants and enhance accountability in research ethics. The Panel is composed of 12 volunteer members who bring diverse expertise and views on research involving humans from such fields as ethics, law, psychology, engineering, medicine, research involving aboriginal peoples, sociology and administration. Details on the Panel's activities are available at http://www.pre.ethics.gc.ca.
