Overview

About

I specialize in the application of radiogenic isotope systems (U-Pb, Pb-Pb, Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd) to a wide variety of geological problems related to crust/mantle evolution through time. Current research projects include unravelling the timing of igneous, metamorphic and deformational events in complex Precambrian orogenic belts such as the Trans Hudson and Grenville orogenic, investigating the Isotopic architecture of the subcontinental mantle using both kimberlites (plus entrained xenoliths) and alkaline magmatism associated with intracontinental rifting as mantle probes, and global correlation of large igneous provinces as constraints for supercontinentreconstructions.

Research interest

Dr. Larry M. Heaman specializes in the application of radiogenic isotope systems (U-Pb, Pb-Pb, Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf ) to a wide variety of geological problems related to crust/mantle evolution through time. A primary focus is the application of U-Pb geochronology to dating terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials including minerals, such as zircon, baddeleyite, monazite, titanite and perovskite, and fossils.  Current research projects include deciphering the origin of Large Igneous Provinces, the nature of the Archean/Proterozoic boundary, the isotopic architecture of the subcontinental mantle, the origin of kimberlites and related rocks, the precambrian crust/mantle evolution including the nature of Earth's earliest crust.

Research opportunity
  • Relationship between global mafic magmatism, core evolution,
  • supercontinent breakup and climate change
  • Nature of Earth's earliest crust
  • Precambrian tectonics
  • Architecture of Earth's mantle through time
