Transfer Students

Your course registration will depend on the program you have been admitted to and the transfer credit you receive.

First Up: Locate Your Admission Package

  • Your admission package should include your admission letter and a Transfer Credit Report.
    Please Note: Admission decisions are sent to your U of A email address, we no longer mail paper copies. Remember to check your "@ualberta.ca" email account regularly.
  • Your admission letter from the Faculty of Science may include important details about your program. Any urgent deficiencies you need to meet or important notes and reminders will also be included with this letter.
  • The Transfer Credit Report (TCR) will list all courses that have been evaluated for transfer credit. If you received credit for a course it will be indicated on this report and the University of Alberta equivalent will be listed.
  • These 2 documents are key to determining what courses are remaining in your program what to register for in your first year on our campus.

A few thing to keep in mind...

  • University courses are assigned credit hours which are denoted with a star. ("*")
  • Half year classes are *3 and run from September - December or January - April
  • Full year classes are *6 and run from September - April
  • All science degrees are 4 year programs and consist of *120.

Common Questions

1. I received credit BIOL 2XX rather than BIOL 201. What does the "XX" mean?
Occasionally we see university-level courses that are similar to, but not exactly the same as courses we offer. We feel that the course material covered in these courses offer sufficient knowledge to qualify for credit, but since it is not exact we cannot assign direct credit to one of our university courses. In the case of BIOL 2XX, credit is being granted for a 200 level Biology course.
Note: this course will still count towards university pre-requisites.

2. According to the Alberta Transfer Guide my course is transferable to the University of Alberta, but I did not receive credit for it towards my Science degree. Why?
We award transfer credit for university level courses that fit within your new science program and there could be various reasons for you not receiving credit in a particular course. If you have received the maximum number of transfer credit allowed, or have exceeded the junior level course limit, or repeated a course that was already successfully completed, you will not receive transfer credit. If you do not fall within these categories, please contact the undergraduate office to inquire about your course.

3. Who is my Departmental Advisor?
Specialization and Honors students are assigned Advisors in the Science departments. Access the Advisor list to find your specific Advisor.
