J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research
Field:  Sciences or Engineering; Social Sciences, Humanities, Fine Arts, Education, and Law
Value: Two awards at $5,000 each and plaque of recognition
Administered by the University of Alberta Vice-President (Research)
Deadline: January 19, 2018 to the Faculty of Science (Internal Faculty of Science deadline is 3 weeks prior to VP deadline February 9, 2018)

Petro-Canada Young Innovator Awards Program

Field: Early career in Science, Business and Engineering
Value: One award valued at $20,000
Criteria: (1) Full-time faculty are eligible who are no more than 8 years beyond the completion of the doctoral degree. For this component, the UofA does not have to be their first academic appointment.
(2) Full-time faculty are eligible if they are beyond the 8-years of receiving the PhD and the UofA is their first academic appointment. [Apparently the intent of this was to accommodate personnel who came to UofA later in their career. Those in industry or with government agencies would be two examples.] These faculty are eligible within 4 years from the date of commencement of their faculty position.

Value: $2000 to be spent in any of the acceptable categories listed in NSERC research grant guidelines
Criteria: Nominees must be within 12 years of completion of their Ph.D.'s at the nomination deadline of January 31 each year (or next business day)

Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring 
Field: Given annually to one member of the academic staff in recognition of outstanding performance in mentoring the research of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars.
Value: Prize of $5,000 and a commemorative certificate at the Annual Killam Event, which is held each fall.

Value: $70,000 per year (taxable)/2 years (non-renewable)

Faculty of Science Conference Fund
The Conference Fund supports international, national, and provincial conferences and symposia hosted, organized and/or coordinated by members of the Faculty of Science that contribute to scholarship.  Grants are awarded to academic staff or students and funding will be prioritized according to the stature of the conference. The funding for the Conference Fund comes from the office of the Vice-President (Research) and is administered by the Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Science.

Faculty of Science Visiting Scholar Program
Deadline: December 15
The Faculty of Science Visiting Scholar Program provides opportunities for established researchers from other universities or research institutes to conduct short-term research with research groups or centres in the Faculty of Science.

Field: To recognize those Faculty members who are extraordinary in mentoring the next generation of young scientists, professionals, and scholars in our Faculty.
