Become a Mentor

As a collaborative initiative between the Faculty of Science and the Interdepartmental Science Students' Society, the Science Mentor Program offers leadership opportunities that will make a difference in the first-year experiences of science students.

Are you interested in gaining leadership skills and building strong on-campus networks? The Science Mentor Program is a great way to get involved and give back to your campus community.

  • What does the role of a mentor include?

    The Science Mentorship Program offers two leadership opportunities for Faculty of Science students.

    Mentors

    Approximately 60 students are selected each year to be science mentors. This role includes:
    - Participating in mentor training
    - Mentoring students new to campus through bi-weekly communication in through the fall semester.
    - Connecting via email with prospective science students
    - Participating in a minimum of 3 hours of mentor volunteer activities including events such as Open House, Week of Welcome, Alumni events and more.


    Senior Mentors

    In addition to the same responsibilities as mentors, 9 senior mentors are selected each year to:
    - Run group interviews and help to select the full mentor team
    - Run mentor training sessions
    - Lead a group of 6 mentors
    - Participate in the promotion of the program to incoming students
    - Attending monthly senior mentor meetings and facilitate mentor group meetings

  • Who can apply to be a mentor?

    Applicants to the Science Mentor Program are required to be:

    - Attending the Faculty of Science during the academic year in which you are applying to be a mentor

    - In good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA)

    - Available to attend the required dates as listed on the application


    Traits that are commonly associated with successful mentor applicants include:

    - Efficient communication skills

    - Committed to great leadership

    - Passionate about the student experience in the Faculty of Science
