University Health Centre

Dr. Tankel: Obstetrics & Gynecology

Dr. Tankel provides specialist medical care related to pregnancy and treatment that focuses on issues related to the female reproductive system. He works at the U of A University Health Centre (UHC), and downtown at the Hys Centre. Your prenatal care will be at the UHC. Only in rare cases will you ever need to be seen at the downtown location.

Dr. Tankel can see current* U of A undergraduate and graduate students and family members of students (a spouse/common law partner, dependent child of a student). Unfortunately, Dr. Tankel cannot see post-doctoral fellows, U of A staff, or SU employees at the University Health Centre, but referrals from a UHC family physician to see Dr. Tankel at his Hys Centre office can be given.

*Former students who have previously been seen by Dr. Tankel at UHC may call to book an appointment at his Hys Centre office. Patients must indicate to staff at the Hys Centre that they are former patients of Dr. Tankel’s from the UHC.

  • Appointment length and wait time

Appointments are scheduled for 15 minutes. Wait times, however, are difficult to predict and can be variable. Due to the nature of specialist practice, Dr. Tankel deals with emergencies and deliveries during office hours. We recommend that you plan to be at the clinic for approximately 3 hours.

In order for Dr. Tankel to see you as quickly as possible, we advise that you register at the clinic for your scheduled appointment time.

  • Booking at the Hys Office or UHC
Dr. Tankel sees U of A student & family of students exclusively at UHC. Existing U of A patients cannot book appointments at his Hys Centre office. To see a different OB/GYN, you will need a referral from a family physician, including a UHC physician. Wait times will depend on your medical issue as well as the specific OB/GYN’s availability. We cannot provide referrals to multiple OB/GYNs.
  • Booking IUD appointments

If you meet the criteria for booking an appointment with Dr. Tankel, the process for booking an IUD insertion is simple.

You can call the UHC to book your initial appointment for the IUD insertion. UHC administrative staff will discuss all instructions for the appointment at the time of booking, including pain management strategies, lab/bloodwork requirements, and Dr. Tankel’s cancellation policy.

You won’t necessarily need to see another physician before your appointment with Dr. Tankel.

    Prescription and Bloodwork

If you have Alberta Health Care coverage, you can visit the UHC pharmacy for an IUD prescription (Mirena®) and a lab requisition for bloodwork.

If you have out-of-province health care coverage, a pharmacy consultation will cost $25; or, you may also see a family physician at UHC with the visit covered by your provincial health insurance or UAHIP coverage.

The bloodwork will need to be completed at a Dynalife Dx location one or two (1-2) days prior to your appointment with Dr. Tankel.

  • Booking prenatal appointments

You can book a first pre-natal appointment in person or over the phone at UHC. A first prenatal appointment will be booked when you are at 12 weeks of your pregnancy. You can then book a second prenatal appointment for 16 weeks. We ask that you call UHC to book all additional prenatal appointments by week 16.

We will give you a schedule for when to book prenatal appointments Prenatal appointments are booked every 4 weeks up until week 32; appointments after week 32 are every 2 weeks; appointments after week 36 are weekly.

  • Children at appointments
We recommend that you do not bring your children with you as we do not have any childcare available during your appointment and there is often a long wait to see Dr. Tankel.

Concerns about your pregnancy

If you are less than 20 week (5 months) pregnant, call UHC at 780-492-2612 and ask to speak with one of Dr. Tankel’s nurses. If you are more than 20 weeks (5 months) pregnant, go directly to the Royal Alexandra Hospital Labor & Delivery Unit if you have any of the following:

  • bleeding,
  • unusual or severe abdominal pain or cramping,
  • decreased fetal movement, or
  • signs of premature labor (fluid leak, regular tightening).

For all other concerns please call us at 780-492-2612 during regular hours.
