Situated Knowledges: Indigenous Peoples and Place

Welcome to Situated Knowledges: Indigenous Peoples and Place

The University of Alberta, situated on places with a deep Indigenous histories, has both a large concentration of Indigenous scholars across all Faculties, as well as unique programs and units. Home to the only Faculty of Native Studies in North America, a Faculty of Education with a long history of Indigenous scholarship and programming, and the long-standing Canadian Indigenous Languages and Literacy Development Institute (CILLDI), has shown significant commitment to an ongoing and sustained response to the TRC Calls to Action. As part of this response, the Situated Knowledges: Indigenous Peoples and Place (SKIPP) signature area was established in May of 2019.

A core goal of SKIPP is to weave together much of the excellent research and teaching scholarship already present at the U of A, as well as recognize the long and storied relationships to place that characterize Indigenous ways of being throughout the world. As a network of scholars and community partners, we explore how to create ethical space for Indigenous-engaged research and teaching in all faculties and programs.

Our network includes 308 scholars from all 18 faculties. We take an inclusive view of scholars, so our network includes faculty, staff, and students. We have two Co-Directors, Kisha Supernant (Métis) and Tracey Hillier (Qalipu First Nation) and are currently developing a governance structure that centres Indigenous ways of knowing.
