Sociology 4th Annual Theory Retreat

A. Winkler - 24 October 2012

The fourth Theory Retreat lead by Dr. Rob Shields and Dr. Jason Wallin
was held near Slave Lake, Alberta from October 12 -14, 2012. An open
invitation for participation in this event was extended to all
Sociology Graduate Students and professors as well as the wider
University of Alberta community.

Thirteen University of Alberta students and faculty members
workshopped their writing at the gathering. The format of this
academic exchange facilitated prolonged, concentrated and in-depth
engagement with each participant's ideas, which included detailed and
constructive feedback on research proposals, theses and dissertations.

The coming together of students from Sociology, Secondary Education,
Human Ecology and Rehabilitation Medicine created a uniquely potent
learning community. While all participants grappled with similar broad
theoretical questions, diverse disciplinary backgrounds promoted
dynamic discussion that sparked innovative ways of thinking and
working through problems.

The participants would like to thank the Department of Secondary
Education and the HM Tory Chair Dr. Rob Shields for their support of
this event.
