A reunion of Survivors from the Assiniboia Residential School in Winnipeg was an occasion for them to deploy their knowledge to counter dominant redemptive narratives of residential school history in Canada. This presentation discusses the methodological opportunities and challenges that arise when organizing a commemorative event for purposes of knowledge gathering and dissemination. As well, Survivor remembrances drawn from the reunion will be examined to show how Survivors navigate the complexity of their experiences, including positive experiences that took place amidst the carcerality of the residential school. In contrast to Senator Lynn Beyak's comments about "good things" happening at the schools being "overshadowed" by the charge of genocide, Survivors present the harms of residential schools as existing within a time and space that is uneven and pulsating, but ultimately genocidal in its efforts to destroy their indigeneity.
