The PhD in Sociology strives to educate scholars with a breadth of knowledge of the discipline and specialized in-depth knowledge of particular fields within the discipline. In addition to the below program requirements, students must also complete a Professional Development requirement.

Program Requirements

This is a Full-time study program. Students will normally complete the required 500- and 600-level graded coursework within the first two academic terms and then take the additional two years to complete the Specialization Exam and Candidacy Exam. After successful completion of the Candidacy Exam, candidates then proceed to the completion of the degree, normally within two years, by conducting thesis research and related scholarly activity. Note, timelines for completion vary.

SOC 605 Pro Seminar
The pro-seminar consists of ungraded workshops focusing on different aspects of the sociological craft.

Exams: Specialization exam in an area distinct from the thesis; Pass an oral Candidacy exam taken in the subject field of the thesis research.

Ethics Training - Students must complete the online INT D 710 and INT D 720 courses in their first term to meet the Ethics and Academic Citizenship Requirement.
