SJC Academic Dean Publishes New Book

18 September 2018

A new book by Dr. Shawn Flynn, SJC's Academic Dean, has just appeared. "Children in Ancient Israel: The Hebrew Bible and Mesopotamia in Comparative Perspective" (Oxford University Press, 2018) discusses the stages of a child's life in the religious cults of ancient Mesopotamia and Israel. Using different types of texts (including prayers, medical texts and rituals), the author examines such topics as pre-born children, adoption, slavery and childhood death.
The book addresses issues related to domestic religious practices, the value of children in ancient societies and the worship of YHWH in Israel. The cover features a beautiful image by Canadian aboriginal artist Maxine Noel - Ioyan Mani. Dr. Flynn discussed the book in the podcast OnScript.
