"Children in the Bible and the Ancient World" (Routledge, 2019), edited by SJC Academic Dean Dr. Shawn Flynn and published in the series "Studies in the History of the Ancient Near East," addresses children in the ancient world in a general sense, and children in the Bible more specifically. The volume looks at children in relation to three broad areas: the Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East, Christian writings and the Greco-Roman world, and materiality.
The ten scholars who contributed to the volume, including Dr. Doris Kieser of SJC, are all experts in their own right, whether discussing obstetric knowledge, infant abandonment, the role of marriage, sexual abuse, the skeletal remains of ancient children, or the female maturity of Mary, the mother of Jesus.
The field of childhood studies is relatively new and as such, little has been done to examine the role of children in the Bible or the general world of Antiquity. This volume will appeal to all who are interested in childhood seen through the lens of ancient history, as well as those who appreciate how the ancient world and the Bible illuminate each other.
