Educational Quality

St. Stephen's College is an Associate Member of the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS), and is actively working toward full membership and accreditation with ATS.

The Art Therapy programs at St. Stephen’s College meet the Educational Standards of the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA).  Approved programs include:

  • MPS (Art Therapy stream)
  • Post-Master’s Art Therapy Diploma

In partnership with the Alberta Consortium for Supervised Pastoral Education, St. Stephen’s offers Clinical Psychospiritual Education that is accredited by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care / Association canadienne de soins spirituels (CASC/ACSS).

St. Stephen’s is an approved Designated Learning Institution (DLI) registered with the Province of Alberta.  The Designated Learning Institution (DLI) number for St. Stephen's College is O19391057115.  The following graduate-level Designated Learning Programs are eligible to receive international students:

  • Doctor of Ministry (two streams)
  • Master of Psychotherapy and Spirituality (two streams)
  • Master of Theological Studies (three streams)
  • Post-Master’s Art Therapy Diploma
  • Graduate Certificates (five in total)

As a divinity school, St. Stephen’s College is categorized by the Province of Alberta as a private post-secondary institution.  The Government of Alberta Ministry of Advanced Education (Campus Alberta Quality Council) does not review or approve degrees in divinity. 


Statement of Educational Effectiveness

St. Stephen’s quantifies educational effectiveness using measures arising from internal data gathering, and which are reported on annually for surveys conducted by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). The quality of the educational experience as well as the effectiveness of the entire institution is of paramount importance to faculty and staff in providing an educational experience that is highly valued by students.

Notice of ATS Comprehensive Evaluation Visit

St. Stephen’s College is hosting a comprehensive evaluation visit for initial accreditation by the ATS Commission on Accrediting on March 20–23, 2023. The purpose of this visit is to verify that the school meets all applicable Commission Standards of Accreditation. Comments regarding how well the school meets those standards and/or generally demonstrates educational quality may be sent to the ATS Director of Commission Information Services (accrediting@ats.edu, 412-788-6505) at least two weeks before the visit. Comments may also or instead be sent in writing to the Principal and Dean, Dr. Fred Tappenden, st.stephens@ualberta.ca. All comments will be shared with the onsite evaluation committee.
