General Surgery is charged not only with the responsibility of training its own 46 residents, the Division also provides surgical experience for Otolaryngology, Orthopedics, Urology, Cardiac, Plastics, Neurosurgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology residents. The Division provides basic clinical training for residents specializing in Radiation Oncology, Anesthesia, Emergency, Nuclear Medicine, Diagnostic Radiology and Anatomic Pathology and provides a month-long surgical experience for over 50 Family Practice residents.
The objectives of residency training are achieved through the five-year Postgraduate Medical Education (PME) program at the University of Alberta. The mission of the surgical residency program is to provide individuals with a firm knowledge base as well as the clinical and technical skills necessary to practice the discipline of General Surgery. Upon completion of this program, the trainee will have obtained the necessary prerequisites set by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada for certification in General Surgery.
PME activities of the Division of General Surgery are maintained through the Office of Surgical Education (OSE).
