Research spans the entire range of investigation from molecular and cell biology to translational and educational research to multicentre randomized clinical trials. Work is in the most challenging disciplines of medicine including critical care, oncology, transplantation, trauma and surgery.

- Metabolic, immunologic and cognitive response to injury and disease, and the molecular biology of inherited and acquired diseases.
Division of Surgical Research (DOSR), Mission: The DOSR supports and promotes discovery and clinical research within the department. Our focus is on developing the research abilities of trainees and fostering the synergistic potential of collaboration between basic scientists and clinician scientists. We believe this synergy has the greatest potential to create important knowledge and new and better treatments for our patients.
Department of Surgery Research Committee, Mission:
The Research Committee of the Department of Surgery provides a forum for representatives of department divisions to organize, support, and develop policy related to departmental research activities.
The senior director of the Division of Surgical Research, Dr. Colin Anderson, chairs the research committee overseeing research programs in the division. The research committee is made up of members from each division within the department as well as a surgical resident and a basic science student to represent graduate students.

The Division of Surgical Research offers research facilities for graduate students or surgical residents who wish to register for the degree of MSc or PhD in experimental surgery.
Membership in the Department of Surgery is multidisciplinary with basic scientists and surgeon-scientists from all surgical subspecialties within the department. Research interests are focused in the following areas:
