Dr. Adetola Adesida Nets Nearly $700,000 in Grants

10 August 2018

Dr. Adetola Adesida's research team in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery and Division of Surgical Research has received a five-year, $200,000 Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Discovery Grant for "Meniscus fibrochondrocytes mechano-hypoxia transduction." The research focuses on molecular communication between mechanical loading and hypoxia (low oxygen tension) in the knee meniscus. This tissue exists under hypoxia in our knee joint and is responsible for distributing entire body weight across the knee joint during daily activities such as walking and jogging.

The team with members of the Division of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (Drs Martin Osswald, Khalid Ansari and Hadi Seikaly) also received a $478,126, three-year, Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Project Grant for "Precision Engineering of Cartilage Grafts for Nasal Reconstruction." This bioengineering work aims to make and supply cartilage grafts to avoid surgeons from having to take cartilage grafts from other parts of the body such as the rib and ear to rebuild noses.
