Women in Surgery

29 October 2018

Drs. Kristin Hinton, Darcie Kiddoo, Michiko Maruyama, Lanny Li, Joanna Ryan and Mackenzie Lees were panelists during the Women in Surgery discussion on Oct. 15. They spoke to topics including: why they chose surgery as a career, what being a female surgeon is like in a male-dominated specialty, and how the field is changing with more female surgeons coming into practice. The Medical Students' Association Surgery Club organized the event. Dr. Maruyama says, "I love getting involved in medical education - being able to reach out to students about cardiac surgery and also surgery in general. It feels like an opportunity to give back." There was a lot of interest from the attendees who had many questions, including work-life balance. Dr. Maruyama says, "I love getting involved in education - being able to reach out to students about cardiac surgery in particular and surgery and in general. Starting this conversation also provides an opportunity for me to mentor."
