Dr. Gerry Todd: Kidney Transplant Pioneer Retires

30 June 2021

The Department of Surgery wishes Dr. Gerry Todd (right) all the best in his retirement and thanks him for his substantial contributions. Dr. Todd started the Pediatric Renal Transplant program in Edmonton, which has transplanted organs into 170 children with an unprecedented success rate of more than 99.3 %. Prior to Dr Todd’s commitment children were sent to Toronto and to Pittsburgh. When Dr. Todd and Dr. Ron Moore (left) started transplanting kidneys in Edmonton, only 780 renal transplants had been done in the city. Today that figure stands at more than 3,300 and both Drs. Todd and Moore have done over 1000 each. The University of Alberta’s transplant program is ranked as one of the top ten in the world. Dr. Ron Moore says: “We have been very fortunate to have a strong multidisciplinary team all willing to go that extra step to improve patient care. Dr. Todd was a key component of this team and an amazing clinical colleague. It was great to scrub together for one last time before his retirement.”
