The Division of Surgical Research generates cutting edge research that is often carried out together with other divisions in the department, and with world-class research groups, institutions and facilities in Edmonton, Alberta.
Transplantation Research Groups
This research group participates in high profile activities with international leadership roles in the American Society of Transplantation. The group is also a lead developer of several critical infectious diseases guidance documents used by transplant centres around the world.
Major nationally funded investigations include transplantion of:

- Gastrointestinal tissues
Diabetes Research Group
This group is known internationally for excellence in pancreatic islet cell isolation, cyropreservation, and transplantation encompassed in the world renowned Edmonton Protocol. The Edmonton Protocol has successfully treated many diabetics locally and has been adopted throughout the world.
Many basic science investigators contribute to the success of this group. Each has had substantial peer-reviewed national and international grant support.
The development of both stem cells for treatment of diabetes mellitus and xenotransplantation programs has had major success in diversifying investigations and potential new technologies and treatments.

Regeneration of Skin and Bone
Wound healing/skin regeneration and stem cell technology for tissue engineering and regeneration of bone and cartilage are nationally funded and internationally recognized basic science and clinically translational projects.
Research includes using stem cells and cryopreservation for cartilage regeneration in acquired disorders of articular cartilage with a view of tissue engineering articular cartilage for clinical use over the next five years.
The Firefighters Burns and Wound Healing Unit has had initial success with tissue engineered skin in major burns. The unit is currently developing extracellular matrices of specific conformation for subsequent population with autologous skin cells, stem cells and genetically engineered skin for many wound healing and other disorders of the skin.
Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM) / Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstruction Program
The Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM) and the Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstruction Program are world renowned research and clinical centres. They are internationally recognized for programs focused on head and neck reconstruction, rehabilitation and research.
Their priorities in research are functional outcomes, biomedical engineering and modeling and analysis.
iRSM also operates internationally recognized research programs in bone conduction amplification, medical modeling and simulation, and interfacial biomechanics. This work is supported through five research laboratories operating in the clinical environment.
The Centre for the Advancement of Minimally Invasive Surgery (CAMIS) / Ray Rajotte Surgical-Medical Research Institute (RRSMRI)
The Centre for the Advancement of Minimally Invasive Surgery (CAMIS) facilitates the adoption and integration of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in the Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone, by building partnerships with industry and the University of Alberta.
Comprehensive, multi-disciplinary training initiatives include the development of a minimally invasive surgery curriculum for surgery residents at the University of Alberta and an innovative mentoring program for surgeons in practice.
The Ray Rajotte Surgical Medical Research Institute (SMRI) houses educational and research activities, including minimally invasive surgery and is a world class training venue.
