Education

Program Overview:

The Surgery Camps program will be a 5-day training program designed to introduce high school students (Grade 10, 11, 12) to the diverse facets of surgical science. Each day unfolds with a focus on different topics, offering a comprehensive understanding of this dynamic field:

Day 1: How Surgeons See Patients

Explore the process of patient assessment and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) commonly used in medical education. Engage in interactive sessions and simulations to gain insights into the initial stages of surgical care and the importance of effective communication skills.

Day 2: Operating Room and Aseptic Technique

Step into a simulated operating room environment at the RRSMRI and learn about aseptic techniques employed to maintain a sterile surgical environment. Observe simulated surgical procedures and interact with surgical staff to understand the roles and responsibilities within the operating room.

Day 3: Basic Surgical Techniques

Dive into hands-on training in basic surgical techniques. Under the guidance of surgical residents, practice suturing, knot tying, and other fundamental skills required in surgical procedures. This interactive session will help develop a basic understanding of surgical techniques.

Day 4: Minimally Invasive Surgery & Robotic Surgery

Focus on advancements in surgical techniques, particularly minimally invasive surgery and robotic-assisted surgery. Explore the benefits and challenges associated with these innovative procedures through didactic lectures, presentations, and video watching.

Day 5: Surgical Research

Delve into the realm of surgical research, exploring fields such as tissue engineering, wound care, transplantation, and digital surgery. Engage in interactive workshops, demonstrations, and discussions led by leading academic surgeons and basic researchers in the Department of Surgery.
