2021 Tom Williams Surgical Research Day

The first Department of Surgery Resident Research Day occurred November 4, 1989.

Throughout the years the event has grown and undergone a name change. The event was dedicated as the Tom Williams Surgical Research Day in 1993 to honor Dr. Williams and recognize his contributions to the Department of Surgery.

In 2007, after Dr. Williams' passing, the Department of Surgery Resident Research Day was officially rededicated as the Tom Williams Surgical Research Day.

The Tom Williams Surgical Research Day is an accredited event which occurs annually on the second Friday of May. Both oral and poster presentations are given at this event by residents and graduate students from the Department of Surgery.

This event's overall learning objective is to bring awareness to students, residents, faculty, staff, and allied health partners of the research endeavors taking place, in both basic science and clinical science, across the Department of Surgery.

At the end of the program, participants will be equipped to:
  1. Recognize the areas of excellence and expertise in basic science and clinical research in the Department of Surgery
  2. Recognize and identify the topical areas of basic science and clinical research in surgical specialities
  3. Find and identify areas of interest for future projects and opportunities in surgical research and current limitations that could be considered for implementation in one’s own surgical practice
