Green Spaces

Green Spaces helps you integrate sustainable practices into your work and living spaces at the University of Alberta. Earn Bronze, Silver or Gold certification for your campus office, lab, event or living space in residence.

How do I get started?

Learn the full range of decisions and behaviours involved in leading a sustainable lifestyle, both at home and at work.

Take action by completing and submitting the application. An easy-to-follow checklist guides you through ways to reduce waste and pollution, protect natural resources, support social inclusion and invest in our local community.

Earn recognition. You may be surprised to find that you are only a few actions away from achieving certification. The more actions you commit to, the higher level of certification you will receive. Receiving a certificate and proudly displaying it can be a great way to inspire others and model sustainable practices.

  • Events

Thousands of events take place at UAlberta every year. Countless meals are served, conference programs are printed, and guests travel great distances to share their knowledge.

Any event or conference at UAlberta can be certified by Green Spaces. Organizers commit to completing sustainable actions during the event and attendees are encouraged to take action to reduce the impact of the event. Actions include collecting organic waste at lunch, providing tap water, and choosing a venue close to public transit. These ideas and others are highlighted in the application.

  • Labs

Labs can use considerable amounts of water, electricity and products, so small actions can culminate in big benefits for the environment and society. Cultivate a culture of sustainability and maintain a safe workspace for all.

A green lab is a safe lab. Any research, field or teaching lab at UAlberta can be certified by Green Spaces for demonstrating best practices for environmental health and safety. Everyone working in the lab commits to reducing waste, conserving energy and water and maintaining a safe space. Actions include turning off unused equipment and finding alternatives to hazardous chemicals. These ideas and others are highlighted in the application.

  • Offices

Every office is a small community and there are hundreds of offices across UAlberta’s five campuses. Your office can be a sustainability leader by coming together to plan meetings, travel and purchasing decisions with sustainability in mind.

Any group of people working in the same space (a work unit) can be certified by Green Spaces. It all starts by making a collective commitment to reduce your environmental impact and promote social good. Actions include using recycled paper, purchasing lightly used office furniture and stocking reusable dishes. These ideas and others are highlighted in the application.

  • Residences

Adopting a sustainable lifestyle at home can help you understand how to bring sustainability into your future career. Learn sustainable practices that you will use for the rest of your life.

Anyone living on campus can have their dorm or apartment certified by Green Spaces. Commit to engaging and promoting sustainability on campus, and take steps to reduce waste and conserve energy and water in your living space. Actions include using cloth grocery bags and eco-friendly cleaning products. These ideas and others are highlighted in the application.
