Sign-Up for the 2nd University of Alberta Indigenous Networking Forum

Since July of 2015, I have had the privilege of working on Aboriginal Initiatives, now known as Indigenous Initiatives, for the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). This includes co-chairing the Council on Aboriginal Initiatives with Chancellor Doug Stollery and supporting the University’s work in Indigenous research and scholarship, teaching and learning environments, student-centered supports, and responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.

As part of this work, we embarked on a broad consultation process to better understand what the University community has done as well as what we need to go forward. In December of 2015, we had our first Aboriginal Networking Forum. The event was eye opening and inspiring to all who attended to hear over 70 snappy presentations. We were able to create an inventory of current activities and continue to determine how our community can work together to be more impactful, build capacity, foster greater collaboration, and identify where new efforts are required.

It is evident through consultations and last year’s networking event that extensive work continues to advance opportunities for Indigenous students, staff, scholars, and research, to strengthen Indigenous communities, and to encourage supportive dialogue, trust, understanding, and sharing.

On February 2, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m. in Council Chambers, University Hall, we will present our 2nd Annual Indigenous Networking Event to increase awareness of Indigenous Initiatives across the University. You are invited to present your work on Indigenous Initiatives or to simply attend to learn more about all the exciting things going on at the U of A. This will be an opportunity to make connections between existing projects, consult on ideas for new initiatives, and to learn what’s already going on. By popular demand, more networking time is built in this year. Presentations will be restricted to 2 minutes (as they were last year) to maximize exposure and time for connecting.

Note: Numbers are needed to plan the presentation agenda and the refreshments.

There is more work to be done and consultations will continue. I invite you to contact me to share your work and ideas.
