Year-end Fundraising Results Demonstrate Donor Confidence in the U of A

It's a magical moment-that time in a conversation with a donor when their interest in doing something great comes together with an opportunity to support a student, a researcher or a teacher at the university. That connection, that link, changes lives. For example, watch what happened when donor Neil Siemens, '66 BSc, met student Kaylan Burns. I am honoured to witness these moments in my work.

Last year, donors like Mr. Siemens gave a total of $176.7 million to the University of Alberta. Achieving this record amount was a collective effort across across the university, and I thank everyone involved for their work in reaching this level of achievement.

Gifts to the university came from 19,684 individuals, corporations and foundations who have confidence in the people who work here and the work we do. Of note, the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation gave $40 million last year-the largest gift in the university's history. Combined with the largest gift in the history of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation of $14.5 million, a total of $54.5 million was donated to the Women and Children's Health Research Institute.

Our donors believe they can make a difference in a cause that matters to them by working with the university. Donors also trust in our ability to make a difference over the long-term, affirming that universities generate new ideas to help solve society's big problems.

The university consulted with donors and other stakeholders on updating our endowment spending policy. Effective April 1, 2018, 4.0% of the endowment's 60-month average market value will be allocated for spending every year. This straightforward approach will make more funds available for current use, while ensuring the endowment continues to grow and benefit future generations of students, professors and researchers.

Thank you to everyone involved in the university's success last year and to the generous community that supports us.
