The University of Alberta Libraries lost a valuable member our staff on March 28th of this year. Beverly Diotte joined our staff in November, 2008 after having worked for several years at the Stanley Milner Branch of Edmonton Public Library. She took on the position of Public Service Assistant at the John W. Scott Health Sciences Library, coming to us with an interesting connection to the health field in that she had been involved with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry as a standardized patient - acting as a real patient in order to simulate health problems for medical students and residents.

After joining us, Bev quickly learned the Library ropes and became a valuable member of the Scott Team. She was an exemplar of the public service ideals expected of library staff, and, as such, always went the extra mile to assist students and staff to navigate library resources and services. She brought a personal touch to her interactions with library users, getting to know our regulars and making every service transaction more than just 'business'.

Bev jumped at the chance to be involved in library system-wide initiatives. Of the many contributions she made to the U of Alberta Libraries, notable were her activities related to wellness. She was involved in the initial collaboration with the Healthy Campus Unit to bring Unwind Your Mind activities to our libraries as well as the collaboration with the Chimo Animal Assisted Wellness and Learning Society to launch our successful Pets in the Library initiative. Within the Scott, in addition to being a model of excellent public service, she was appreciated for her work in assisting with the set-up of meaningful displays, assisting with arrangements for events such as the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry Research Days and arranging our periodic (and well-deserved) wellness lunches. As activities outside work, she endeavoured to make us millionaires by managing our lottery ticket purchases and could be relied upon to provide excellent reading suggestions as well as suggestions for weekend TV binge-watching.

After learning of Bev's passing, her colleagues shared their thoughts of her, and the words kindness, good-spirited, generous, animal lover were repeated often.

We will miss Bev and extend our condolences to her husband, Michel Diotte, and the rest of her family.
