I am pleased to announce that Dr. Florence Glanfield has been appointed to the newly-created role of Vice-Provost (Indigenous Programming and Research) in the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), effective August 1, 2019.
Dr. Glanfield comes to the Vice-Provost position from her previous role as Professor and Chair of the Department of Secondary Education in the Faculty of Education, where her primary areas of scholarship include mathematics teacher education, Aboriginal curriculum perspectives, and relational research methodologies. She is an Affiliated Faculty member with the Centre for Research for Teacher Education and Development.
Dr. Glanfield is a member of the Métis Nation of Alberta. She has significant experience working with Indigenous communities, provincially, nationally, and internationally through research, teaching, and language revitalization projects, and has also built relationships and collaborated with many Indigenous groups within the university.
In her new role, Dr. Glanfield will lead development, consultation, and approval of the Indigenous Strategic Plan in support of the objectives articulated in For the Public Good, build and nurture positive relationships with Indigenous communities, support the work of Faculties and Departments to Indigenize curricula across programs, and foster a supportive environment for Indigenous faculty, students, and staff.
Dr. Glanfield’s appointment comes after a long and careful consultation process with stakeholders within and outside the university on the best leadership structure to advance the university’s critical work responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and creating a work and learning environment that is safe and welcoming for Indigenous staff, faculty, and students. I want to thank Dr. Chris Andersen, Dean of Native Studies, and Ms. Shana Dion, Assistant Dean (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students) for their significant work in the last year advancing the university’s Indigenous initiatives and laying the groundwork for the appointment of a Vice-Provost.
I am looking forward to working with Dr. Glanfield in this new capacity and to benefiting from her depth of experience and understanding. I hope you will join me in welcoming Dr. Glanfield to her new role.
