Earlier this week, many employees received an email inviting them to participate in a Faculty and Staff Engagement Survey. So what will the responses be used for? And what is engagement anyway? Having piloted the survey in her own Faculty, we asked Dr. Jennifer Tupper, Dean of the Faculty of Education, to share her own experience.

What does engagement mean to you?

“Engagement is about experiencing a sense of purpose and a connection to our work, colleagues, and to the university. An engaged work environment is where we feel valued, respected, supported, and energized.”

Why was this a good time for the university to deliver an engagement survey?

“The university has never done an engagement survey before so the time is now! The survey results are an important mechanism for understanding employee engagement on our campus and making decisions about how best to support the employee experience at the U of A.”

How will the survey help you improve engagement?

“The design of the questions allowed us a fuller and more in-depth understanding of faculty and staff experiences. With this enhanced understanding, we will be able to create actions that advance engagement.”

What did Faculty of Education faculty and staff say about the survey?

“Faculty and staff appreciated the opportunity to provide feedback about their experiences, make suggestions about the future, and consider the ways in which they might be better supported in their work. They appreciated seeing the results and especially the drivers of engagement for each group.”

What did you learn from the survey and what are the next steps?

“We learned about areas of strength, but more importantly, areas that need some care and attention. As a faculty, we are creating action plans meant to address these areas and we are excited about implementing them!”
