I am very pleased to announce the reappointment of André Costopoulos as the Vice-Provost and Dean of Students for a second five-year term from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2026, with unanimous support of the Dean Review Committee and the Board Human Resources and Compensation Committee.
Dean Costopoulos is highly regarded and respected by his colleagues and students. He consistently demonstrates a strong and authentic connection to stakeholders, as well as a deep commitment to serving students. He is a principled leader of the Dean of Students portfolio, driven by commitments to equity, diversity, inclusivity, fairness, student safety, well-being, and success.
In his first term, Dean Costopoulos has led several significant initiatives, including developing the 2017 Sexual Violence Policy, creating a robust, rapid crisis response process, fostering a movement towards a universally designed learning environment, and establishing a responsive, coordinated process for providing student accommodations. In the last nine months, he has actively promoted a compassionate and student-focused approach to the university’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have been grateful for his leadership, his counsel, and his commitment to the students of the University of Alberta.
