The University of Alberta was announced as a 2017 Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking (LEEP) Campaign award winner at the annual International Facility Management Association (IFMA) World Workplace Conference and Expo in Houston, Texas. UAlberta was one of 15 winners recognized for achieving exceptional energy reductions in parking facilities through high-efficiency lighting and controls, and is the first Canadian institution to participate in the LEEP program.

In fall 2016 Southfield Car Park was refreshed with energy efficient LED lights, occupancy sensors, and brighter paint. This collaborative project between Energy Management and Sustainable Operations (EMSO) and Parking Services started with the goal to make university car parks brighter, safer, and less energy intensive. The project dramatically improved lighting while also delivering a 17 per cent energy saving. The retrofits of this single parking structure will result in 33,164 kWh of energy saved annually, reducing carbon emissions by 21,605 kg each year. For these efforts, UAlberta Facilities and Operations received the LEEP award for an Exemplary Higher Education Sector Parking Facility.

"University of Alberta Parking Services understands that it has a role to play in the university's overall sustainability strategy," said Randa Kachkar, associate director of Parking Services. "Implementing efficiencies through these lighting systems creates brighter spaces while utilizing less energy - a twofold step toward a positive customer service experience." So far retrofits have been completed at Southfield and Stadium Car Parks. Renovations in the Timms/Telus Centre Car Park are underway, with the goal to renovate all North Campus parking structures within the year.

The LEEP program is a collaboration between the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International, IFMA and the International Parking Institute in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Energy's Better Buildings Alliance.
