Winter has arrived! Stay safe on campus

Learn how snow is managed on campus and how you can stay safe this winter.

02 November 2018

Do you ever feel like as soon as the snow falls, everyone forgets how to drive in Edmonton (as if we didn't just have snow a few short weeks ago…)?

But here in Facilities & Operations (UAlberta's unofficial weather experts), we are unhappy to report that today's snowfall is likely here to stay! That means it's time to remind ourselves how we can stay safe on campus while the snow flies.

First thing's first: who's responsible for clearing the snow?

Operator's and Area staff are the folks who take care of the snow and ice on roads, sidewalks, parking lots, parkades, loading docks, and a few other areas on campus. Clearing the snow becomes priority one for these folks when the snow begins to fly. You'll usually see them driving front end loaders, bobcats, sand trucks, or graders. Staff also take care of doorways, stairwells, ramps, and narrow walkways.

What can you do to stay safe?

  • The most important thing you can do to stay safe in the snowy conditions is to be aware! Pay attention to the weather conditions from a trusted source (so, not us), because you may need to give yourself additional time to get to your classes, to the gym, or to attend that cross campus meeting.

  • It's also time to update your wardrobe and footwear! Keep a pair of winter boots at your desk or in your car, and make sure you swap out your fall jackets for winter ones.

  • Reduce the likelihood of slipping and falling by keeping your phone in your pocket and your eyes on the sidewalk or stairwell!

  • Use the handrails on the stairs, just another aide in keeping upright.

  • Please give our staff some space to work! They are focused on keeping everyone safe (including themselves), but the equipment has some blind spots, so it's good to be aware and cautious.

How do we decide which areas of campus to clear first?

Some folks on campus might wonder why we can't start clearing the snow until 7:00 am, and that's because we follow the City of Edmonton's noise bylaws. Our loaders and equipment can't make noise that affect the surrounding community and our campus residences! Because of this, we work from the core of campus outwards, concentrating on major arterial roads and walkways.

If you encounter snow and ice where it shouldn't be or do have a slip and fall, please report it to us! Safety is our priority in Facilities & Operations, so please call the maintenance desk 780-492-4833 if you need assistance.
