Cleaning Services on Campus

Buildings, Grounds, and Environmental Services' team of in-house and contracted cleaning professionals works hard to keep UAlberta’s buildings clean. Our cleaning team is responsible for cleaning 18 million square feet of space on our campuses every single day!

Cleaning staff regularly perform routine cleaning services, such as mopping, vacuuming, wiping and dusting. We provide major cleaning services, such as washing walls and windows, waxing floors, and shampooing carpets, annually.

Our Cleaning Schedule

Most cleaning on campus takes place in the late afternoon and at night. Our afternoon shift cleaning staff is on site from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Friday. Our night shift cleaning staff is on site from Sunday to Thursday from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

During the day, our cleaning staff is on campus cleaning public areas and entrances. From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, our day shift cleaning staff provides on-call service for spills, washroom patrol and other cleaning service requests.

Office Cleaning

Office space is cleaned every two weeks.

Our cleaning staff does not touch personal items on your desk (like papers and folders). If you would like your desk cleaned, please remove your personal items.

If the garbage in your office builds up during the two weeks between cleanings, please empty it into the large waste bins in or near your space. Our cleaning staff does not empty desk-side recycling bins. Please empty your desk-side recycling bin in one of the larger recycling bins in or near your space.

Cleaning Standards

Our cleaning staff and contractors follow APPA: Leadership in Educational Facilities standards to provide quality cleaning services. If you would like to arrange cleaning services beyond this standard (at your department or faculty’s cost), please contact your Facility Services Manager.

Cleaning Quality Assurance Program

Our Quality Assurance Inspectors work with our cleaning team to ensure all cleaning tasks are in line with APPA standards. Scheduled cleaning inspections are completed once every two months in each campus building, with unscheduled spot checks completed in between inspections. The results of these inspections help our cleaning team ensure our required cleaning service levels are achieved and consistently maintained.

Cleaning For a Healthy U Program

The Cleaning for a Healthy U Program outlines cleaning guidelines that reduce the spread of cold and flu viruses on campus. For example, we reduce cross-contamination in UAlberta bathrooms with no-touch towel systems and place emphasis on cleaning high-traffic touch zones on campus.
